USS Albacore

On Friday November 30, 2018 we traveled to Portsmouth, New Hampshire to explore the USS Albacore.  A special thanks to our parent volunteers:  Holly Blanc, Emily Freeman, & Chris Hickman!

The Sheepscot Team embarked on a new and exciting unit to study history, STEM topics, and current events.  We will used the movie, “The Hunt for Red October” as a kick off for our unit. The movie opened doors to explore the Cold War, 20th Century technological development (including, but not limited to submarine development), and the parallels to today’s global current events.

Some of the topics we explored will included:

Navigation
Submarine development
Static electricity
Cold War
Sound waves
Penobscot Bay & submarines off the coast of Maine
Russian composers
Turbulence
Sonar

We spent a few days frontloading students with pertinent information necessary to gain the greatest understanding from the events from the movie, “The Hunt for Red October.”  We discussed a broad summary of the Cold War, and how sonar works.
